It is estimated that about 2.5 Million Israelites (Men, Women and Children) along with their livestock left Egypt under Moses’ leadership. It took them 40 years before they reached Canaan. During that time the bible records in Deuteronomy 8:3-4: He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years
For 40 years God fed 2.5 Million Israelites. It is estimated that would have required about 3,750 tonnes of food each day. This is equivalent to 32 railway train cars full of food every day (the train carrying the food would be half a kilometre long). God also provided water for the 2.5 Million people and their livestock. Providing water for just the people WITHOUT catering for their livestock would have required 25 Million Litres of water per day for drinking, washing and any food preparation. This is equivalent to 5,000 No 5,000 litre water tankers per day. Adding livestock would dramatically increase the water requirements. This was the amount of water that came out of the rock that Moses struck.
What is amazing is that God provided this amount of food and water for the 2.5 Million people every day for 40 years (14,600 days). This is the God whom the bible asks us to put our faith in. I know like the disciples we find ourselves in a storm (Matthew 4:35-41): job loss, income loss, business collapse, interpersonal conflict, debts we cannot pay, hunger, health issues and even grief from loss of a loved one. Let us remember that Jesus is in the boat, in the storm with us. He who could sustain 2.5 Million Israelites for 40 years in the wilderness, can and will sustain us. Let us fix our eyes on Him and not on the storm
